The bronze figure is mounted on a moving platform. The mirror, which also moves back and forth, passes in front of Narcissus every 15 seconds or so.

When the mirror passes directly in front of the figure, he gets an erection at the sight of his reflection. There is a very strong magnet built into the mirror assembly that causes the steel part to lift.
